How this plan is built
- Last comes test week: half your hours, nothing new, rest the day before.
- Before it, full-lengths: 6 to 8 weeks, fewer when time is short. One a week at 12 hours a week or more, every other week below that.
- Before that, content, then passages: 2 weeks to 1 if you are just starting, 1 to 3 if content is mostly done (content for your weakest section only), passages only if you are taking full-lengths.
- Hours: your weakest section gets 40% of each week, the others 20% each (25% each if you are not sure).
The exact numbers
Full-lengths get 8 weeks when 20 or more weeks come before test week, 7 with 14 or more, otherwise 6. When 6 would be too many, they get about 45% of the weeks if you are just starting, 55% if content is mostly done, 75% if you are taking full-lengths, and at least one. There are seven AAMC full-lengths, taken in this order: the Unscored Sample Test, then Practice Exams 1 to 6. When fewer fit, the no-cost ones go in first. CARS has no content to learn, so it is passages from week 1. Passages per week scale with the hours: about 2 an hour for CARS, 1.5 for the sciences, half that in content weeks.
Tasks use no-cost resources and the AAMC’s own materials. What the AAMC sells is marked paid; the rest costs nothing. Details
Before Monday
What you’ll use
No cost: AAMC Practice Exam 1 and the AAMC Unscored Sample Test, the AAMC’s What’s on the MCAT Exam? outline, the Khan Academy MCAT collection, and the Red Pen Prep passages and labs linked in the weeks.
Sold by the AAMC, marked paid: Practice Exams 2 to 6, the Section Bank, the Question Packs and the CARS Question Bank. The AAMC Fee Assistance Program includes Official Prep products.
No budget? Keep the no-cost full-lengths where they fall, and use Khan Academy passages wherever a paid set appears.
Run out of passages in one source? At high hours that happens. Move to another one on this list.
